The Evolution and Expansion of Transitional Housing at One SAFE Place

Article

At One SAFE Place (OSP), the Transitional Housing program is more than just a stop along the way—it’s a vital bridge from crisis to stability. For survivors of domestic violence, sexual assault, and human trafficking, this program represents a crucial turning point where safety meets opportunity, and uncertainty gives way to hope.

When Rachel, our Transitional Housing Program Manager, and her team look back on their work, it’s clear that the journey to this point has been nothing short of transformative. “We’re watching people thrive, and it’s incredibly rewarding,” Rachel reflects. “Our team’s dedication has transformed lives, creating a foundation of safety and support that empowers our clients to rebuild and look forward to brighter futures.”

The Transitional Housing program at OSP is not a new initiative, but its recent expansion and enhancement reflect our commitment to adapting and growing to meet the needs of our community. We’ve partnered with local organizations like Northern Valley Catholic Social Service (NVCSS) to expand our housing options, allowing us to offer even more stability to families in need. The OSP transitional housing program now includes 13 units, each functioning as a beacon of hope for those transitioning out of abusive situations. We also have added four permanent homes for those who have moved beyond transitional housing and are ready for a long-term location.

Recently, we’ve added a Housing Services Coordinator who supports our Transitional Housing clients, those in shelter, those seeking legal support, and drop-in clients. This role is pivotal in removing barriers to sustainable housing, offering essential services and support that helps clients remain housed. This addition strengthens our ability to assist survivors, regardless of whether they are in our Transitional Housing program or seeking help through other OSP programs.

Rachel and her team’s approach goes beyond just providing a roof over someone’s head. They focus on cultivating a sense of community among the residents, understanding that rebuilding lives requires more than just physical shelter—it requires emotional and psychological support. Recently, they hosted a backyard BBQ for the clients, a simple gathering that had a profound impact. “We’re seeing a significant increase in hope, resilience, opportunity, and positive futures for those we serve,” Rachel notes, highlighting the importance of these moments in fostering a sense of normalcy and belonging.

Our team’s efforts extend to every aspect of daily life, from helping clients manage their finances to guiding them through job applications and interviews. With a bilingual case manager now on staff, we’re able to offer even more personalized support, ensuring that language barriers don’t stand in the way of recovery and independence. The focus remains on transitioning clients towards self-sustainability, with a streamlined case staffing process that ensures every individual receives the care and attention they need.

Looking ahead, our commitment to empowering clients continues with plans to expand our life skills groups by December. These include a Credit Recovery group, Housing Support sessions that provide assistance with application processes, and a Landlord Roundtable designed to help improve rental applications and increase the likelihood of consideration. These future-forward initiatives are part of our ongoing mission to equip clients with the tools they need to succeed independently.

The impact of this program is not just seen in the immediate relief it provides, but in the long-term stability it fosters. We’ve documented our services to track improvements, and the results are clear: survivors who come through our doors leave with more than just a place to stay—they leave with the tools and confidence to rebuild their lives.

As we continue to expand, our unwavering commitment to the community is clearer than ever. With our capacity now exceeding 17 housing options, we demonstrate our deep belief that every individual deserves the chance to reclaim their life after trauma. The success of our program is rooted in the strong collaboration between our dedicated team, supportive partners, and the wider community—a united network that ensures every person has the opportunity to heal, flourish, and envision a brighter future.

Community support and understanding are vital to the missions of One SAFE Place and Children’s Legacy Center. The services we provide are more than just resources and temporary refuge; they are a lifeline for individuals and families rebuilding their lives after the devastation of child abuse, sexual assault, domestic violence, and human trafficking. By helping to educate individuals about the trauma those we serve endure and the complex journey they face towards healing and stability, we foster a more compassionate community that stands together against abuse.

Your involvement, whether through volunteering, donations, or simply spreading awareness, directly impacts the lives of those seeking safety and a fresh start. Together, we can be the supportive network that transforms hope into reality, ensuring that every person who walks through our doors knows they are not alone and that brighter days are ahead.
