Children's Legacy Center & One SAFE Place
For the last year, One SAFE Place and the Children’s Legacy Center have partnered collaboratively together to streamline, survey, and build plans for long-term sustainability. This partnership has laid the firm foundation upon which we will build a new organization that will continue to serve our community with essential crisis and trauma informed services. We are thrilled to keep you updated with the progress of our merger and have appreciated your unwavering support. This next year, 2024, is our year of unity.

A message from One SAFE Place CEO Kimberly Johnson
1970 through the 21st Century
What began as a humble, yet extraordinary vision of Ms. Gretchen Peterson to protect and shelter victims of domestic violence, became The Shasta County Women’s Refuge in 1979. Established in 1982, The Peterson House was as the first communal shelter in Shasta County.
Domestic violence and sexual assault classes were added to the mission to educate community members in 2003. The name was changed to Shasta Women’s Refuge in 2007 as both accessibility and clarity were needed for the growth experienced at that time.

2010 & Beyond
Then in 2010, Shasta Women’s Refuge and the Shasta County Family Justice Center came together to create what we now know as One SAFE Place. Five years later, in 2015, the doors opened to the Sierra Center.
Since 2015, One SAFE Place has served thousands of people affected by domestic violence in our community through the shelter, transitional housing, court advocacy, holiday support, and counseling services. Due to organizational and financial challenges, the Children’s Legacy Center was called in to provide guidance and a thorough evaluation of One SAFE Place at the end of 2022. Since then, the Children’s Legacy Center and One SAFE Place have partnered in vision, staff, and programmatic support which has led to a merger of the two organizations. Despite the changes, victims continue to be cared for by our heroic staff 365 days a year at the Sierra Center. We look forward to all that is to come!
